A Century of Black History

Black History Month 2026 marks the centennial of its creation by historian Carter G. Woodson as Negro History Week. This year’s theme, “A Century of Black History Commemorations,” encourages reflection on how honoring Black history has shaped cultural identity and national understanding. Communities nationwide are hosting events, educational programs, and tributes to celebrate achievements and connect local stories to the broader legacy. The observance was created to highlight African American achievements and history at a time when mainstream narratives largely excluded them. Over the decades, it evolved into a month-long national celebration recognized officially in 1976.
